सत्त्वं रजस्तमश्चैव
द्रव्याणि प्रकृतेर्न हि ।
किन्त्ववस्थाविशेषाः स्युः
वस्तूनां प्रकृतेर्ननु ।।१।।
sattvaṁ rajastamaścaiva
dravyāṇi prakṛter na hi
kintvavasthāviśeṣāḥ syuḥ
vastūnāṁ prakṛternanu
सत्व, रजस और तमस प्रकृति के द्रव्य नहीं बल्कि प्रकृति की वस्तुओं के अवस्थाविशेष हैं।
Sattva, rajas, and tamas are not physical elements of nature but are actually particular conditions of the things of nature.
शान्तिसंज्ञानसम्यक्त्व-
शुद्धत्वादिदशास्तु याः ।
कस्यापि ता हि कथ्यन्ते
सत्त्वशब्देन धीमता ।।२।।
śāntisaṁjñānasamyaktva-
śuddhatvādidaśāstu yāḥ
kasyāpi tā hi kathyante
sattvaśabdena dhīmatā
किसी की भी शान्ति, सही ज्ञान, औचित्य, शुद्धता आदि अवस्थाओं को बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति सत्त्व शब्द से कहता है।
The conditions of peace, clarity of thought, propriety, purity, etc. of anything are called sattva by an intelligent person.
विक्रियाक्षोभविक्षेप-
मिश्रत्वादिदशा रजः ।
तन्द्रासम्मोहसंहार-
म्लानत्वाद्यास्तमश्च वै ।।३।।
vikriyākṣobhavikṣepa-
miśratvādidaśā rajaḥ
tandrāsammohasaṁhāra-
mlānatvādyāstamaśca vai
किसी की भी खलबली, बदलाव, उलझन और मिलावट की अवस्थाओं को बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति रजस कहता है, और सुस्ती, मिथ्याज्ञान, विनाश और गन्देपन की अवस्थाओं को तमस कहता है।
The conditions of disturbance, confusion, transformation, adulteration, etc. of anything are called rajas, and the conditions of lassitude, wrong conviction (illusion), destruction, dirtiness, etc. of anything are called tamas.
सर्वं सर्वक्रियाश्चास्मिन्
लोके सन्ति दशात्मकाः ।
दशा गुणाभिधा शास्त्रे
अतो गुणमयं जगत् ।।४।।
sarvaṁ sarvakriyāścāsmin
loke santi daśātmakāḥ
daśā guṇābhidhā śāstre
ato guṇamayaṁ jagat
इस जगत में सब कुछ और सारी क्रियाएं इन दशाओं से बने हुए हैं। शास्त्र में दशा को गुण कहा गया है; अतः सारा जगत गुणमय है।
Everything and every action in this world is made of these conditions (states). Condition is called as guṇa in the śāstra; therefore the world is said to be filled with guṇas.
यस्मिन् यो गुणोऽन्याभ्यां
गुणाभ्यां स्यात् प्रकर्षवान् ।
तत् तद्गुणीति निर्दिष्टं
भवेच्छास्त्रानुसारिभिः ।।५।।
yasmin yo guṇo’nyābhyāṁ
guṇābhyāṁ syāt prakarṣavān
tat tadguṇīti nirdiṣṭo
bhavecchāstrānusāribhiḥ
जिस वस्तु में जो गुण अन्य दो गुणों से अधिक प्रभावशाली होता है वह वस्तु उस गुण वाली है ऐसा शास्त्र के अनुयायी निर्दिष्ट करते हैं।
A thing that has a guṇa that is more prominent than the other two guṇas is stated to be possessing that guṇa by the followers of śāstras.
